Overview

Hallstatt at a glance

Hallstatt is a lakeside village of about 750 people in Austria's Salzkammergut, squeezed between Lake Hallstatt and the Dachstein mountains, and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Its mayor expected about 1.2 million day visitors in 2025, so timing matters more here than almost anywhere: come early, stay into the evening, or spend the night.

The funicular up the Salzberg reopened on 29 August 2026 after a year-long rebuild, so the salt mine, the world's oldest, and the Skywalk platform, 360 metres above the rooftops, are open again. The mine tour costs €49 with the funicular and lasts about 90 minutes (allow three hours in all); the funicular alone, for the Skywalk, is €29 return. The footpath up stays closed until spring 2027.

In the village, the Charnel House at St Michael's Chapel holds more than 600 painted skulls (€2, cash only). The Five Fingers viewing platform is on a different mountain: the Krippenstein cable car at Obertraun, about 10 minutes away on bus 543, costs €47.90 return (€46.70 online), or €67.90 with the Dachstein ice caves, and runs until 1 November in 2026.

The railway station is across the lake, and the Stefanie ferry (€4, cash only) is timed to the trains; the last crossing to the village leaves at 6:30 pm. Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa, and hotels add a local tax of €4 per adult a night.

Questions

Hallstatt FAQs

Yes. The new Salzberg funicular opened on 29 August 2026, and the salt mine and Skywalk are open daily: until 1 November the funicular runs from 9 am to 6 pm, and from 2 November to 6 January from 9 am to 4:30 pm.

€49 for adults including the funicular, or €29 for the funicular alone if you only want the Skywalk. Children under four are not allowed in the mine.

Yes. Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa, applied for through VFS Global for the Austrian embassy in New Delhi, with centres in most large Indian cities. The fee is €90 for adults, decisions normally take 15 days, and you can apply from six months to 15 days before travel; the embassy warns of delays, so book early. ETIAS, the EU's planned travel authorisation, is only for visa-exempt travellers and does not replace the visa.

About 2 hours by public transport: the express bus 150 to Bad Ischl, then a train and the 7-minute ferry, or connecting buses. Trains via Attnang-Puchheim take 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 35 minutes to Hallstatt station.

If you can: the village is at its best early in the morning and in the evening, after the day-trippers leave. Rooms are few, so book early; Obertraun and Bad Ischl are cheaper alternatives.

On 7 October 2026 one euro was ₹108.24 at the mid-market rate, so €100 is about ₹10,820.
