Overview

Riyadh at a glance

Riyadh, the capital, mixes glass towers with mud-brick forts, a new metro and the UNESCO-listed At-Turaif on its north-west edge, and it has one of the largest Indian communities in the Gulf. Three days covers old Riyadh, Diriyah and a Riyadh Season evening; add a fourth for the Edge of the World.

All six Riyadh Metro lines have run since 5 January 2025. Line 4 (Yellow) starts at the airport terminals and runs to KAFD, where you change for Line 1 (Blue) to Olaya and Batha. A 2-hour ticket costs SAR 4 and covers metro and buses; 3 days cost SAR 20 and 7 days SAR 40. Buy in the Darb app, at machines or at ticket offices; reports say the gates take contactless bank cards and phones, but keep the app as a backup.

The National Museum needs no ticket, and At-Turaif is ticketless until 4:59 pm; from 5 pm a SAR 50 pass applies, all of it spendable at the restaurants of At-Turaif and Bujairi Terrace. Riyadh Season 2026 opened on 21 October for about ten weeks, and Boulevard City is free to enter from 4 pm to 2 am.

Come between November and March, and dress modestly: improper clothing fines start at SAR 100, and filming people or incidents without permission costs SAR 1,000. The weekend is Friday and Saturday, and many shops stay shut on Friday mornings. Indian passport holders need a visa: the online eVisa if they hold a used US, UK or Schengen visa or live in the GCC, otherwise the new Package Visa bought with flights and hotel from an approved travel agent, or a visit visa through a visa service centre in India.

The Edge of the World, Riyadh

Paying here

Paying in Riyadh

For the riyal itself, visa rules for Indians, the cash you can carry and the tourist VAT refund, see the Saudi Arabia travel guide, and the SAR to INR page for today's rate. Saudi riyals load on the Matrix Forex Card, so most travellers carry the card plus a small cash float.

Cards, mada terminals and Apple Pay cover malls, cafés, the metro and ride-hailing: electronic payments were 85% of Saudi retail payments in 2025. Carry about SAR 100 a day for Batha eateries, souq stalls and tips; tipping is a custom, not a rule. Spend more than SAR 500 in one store and you can claim the tourist VAT refund at Riyadh airport.

Getting around

Getting around

The metro has six driverless lines, 176 km and 85 stations; children under six ride free with an adult. Most visitors still use Uber or Careem where the metro does not reach, such as Diriyah at night. Visitors may drive on an Indian licence with an International Driving Permit for up to a year; traffic keeps right.

Things to know

Common mistakes in Riyadh

Assuming the eVisa is open to all Indians

India is not on the eVisa list. It works only with a used US, UK or Schengen visa or GCC residence; otherwise use the Package Visa or a visa service centre.

Filming in public

Photographing or filming people or incidents without permission carries a SAR 1,000 fine.

Arriving at At-Turaif at 5:15 pm

It is free before 5 pm; after that the SAR 50 pass applies, so plan dinner there if you come late.

Planning shopping for Friday morning

Many shops stay closed until after Friday prayers.
