Dammam, Al Khobar and Dhahran run into each other along the Gulf coast: the Ithra cultural centre, the Khobar Corniche, the causeway to Bahrain and, a train ride inland, the UNESCO-listed Al-Ahsa oasis, the largest palm oasis in the world. The Eastern Province has a large Indian community, and Al Khobar a long-established South Indian food scene.
King Fahd International Airport is north-west of Dammam, with no rail link; most visitors take Uber, Careem or a pre-booked car to Khobar. Saudi Arabia Railways' East Line runs from Dammam to Hofuf in Al-Ahsa from SAR 35 and to Riyadh from SAR 90 on early-booking fares; every seat is reserved, so buy online or in the app before you board.
Ithra in Dhahran has a library, a museum, a children's museum and the Energy Exhibit; call ahead, as its own site and Visit Saudi showed different hours in October 2026. The Khobar Sea Front is free and open around the clock, and Half Moon Bay is the family beach south of town; modest swimwear is expected on public beaches.
The King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain starts just west of Al Khobar, but Indians need a Bahrain visa first, and a single-entry Saudi visa ends when you leave. Indian passport holders need a visa: the online eVisa if they hold a used US, UK or Schengen visa or live in the GCC, otherwise the new Package Visa bought with flights and hotel from an approved travel agent, or a visit visa through a visa service centre in India.
What to see and do
Ithra is in Dhahran and the Corniche in Al Khobar; Half Moon Bay is south of Khobar, and Al Qarah Mountain is in Al-Ahsa, a train ride inland.

Ithra
The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Dhahran: a four-floor library, the Ithra Museum, a children's museum, a cinema, a theatre and the Energy Exhibit. Call +966 13 816 9799 to confirm the day's hours.

The Khobar Corniche
Palm-lined paths, play areas and cafés along the sea, free and open around the clock, with the lit water tower on its peninsula. Come after sunset, when families arrive.

Al Qarah Mountain
A limestone hill in Al-Ahsa with 28 narrow caverns that stay cool all year, open daily from 8 am to 11 pm. Combine it with Ibrahim Palace (free) and Souq Al Qaisariya in Hofuf.

Half Moon Bay
The sweep of sand south of Al Khobar where Eastern Province families spend beach days. Several stretches belong to resorts and beach clubs with their own rules.
Paying in Dammam and Al Khobar
For the riyal itself, visa rules for Indians, the cash you can carry and the tourist VAT refund, see the Saudi Arabia travel guide, and the SAR to INR page for today's rate. Saudi riyals load on the Matrix Forex Card, so most travellers carry the card plus a small cash float.
Cards, mada terminals and phone payments work in malls, restaurants, ride-hailing apps and on the trains. Carry SAR 80 to 100 a day for Souq Al Qaisariya in Hofuf, small Indian eateries and tips. Dammam airport has four VAT refund kiosks for shopping over SAR 500 in one store.

Getting around
SAPTCO buses link Dammam, Al Khobar, Dhahran and Qatif, but the cities sprawl along highways, so most visitors use Uber or Careem. Driving suits Half Moon Bay and Al-Ahsa's lakes: visitors may drive on an Indian licence with an International Driving Permit for up to a year.
Common mistakes in Dammam and Al Khobar
Assuming the eVisa is open to all Indians
India is not on the eVisa list. It works only with a used US, UK or Schengen visa or GCC residence; otherwise use the Package Visa or a visa service centre.
Crossing to Bahrain on a single-entry visa
The Package Visa and the stopover visa are single entry, so leaving by the causeway ends them.
Buying the Al-Ahsa train ticket on the day
All seats are reserved and early fares are the cheapest. Book online or in the app.
Wearing beachwear off the beach
Swimwear belongs on private beaches and resort pools; elsewhere modest clothing is expected.
