Vietnam currency in one paragraph

What is the currency of Vietnam?

The currency of Vietnam is the Vietnamese dong, code VND, written ₫ after the amount. The State Bank of Vietnam, the central bank, is its sole issuer. The first dong was introduced in 1946, in place of the French Indochinese piastre, and one dong has served the whole country since 1978. The rate is managed: the State Bank sets a central rate against the US dollar each day and lets the dong trade within 5 percent either side of it, so against the rupee it still moves from day to day. On 5 Oct 2026, one dong was worth about ₹0.0043 at our selling rate, which makes 1,000 dong about ₹4.30. The Vietnam currency name is the dong, written đồng in Vietnamese, and a quote in VND currency always means this dong.

The 200,000 dong note, issued on 30 August 2006, carries Ho Chi Minh on its front, as every polymer note does, and Ha Long Bay on its back, with the Dinh Huong rock.

Three swaps in ten years

The money that was swapped three times

Between 1975 and 1985, people in the south of Vietnam saw their money swapped three times: 500 old southern dong for one liberation dong in 1975, a single dong for the whole country in 1978, and ten old dong for one new dong in 1985. The largest note today, the 500,000 dong, was first issued on 17 December 2003.

  1. The south swaps its money

In the south, 500 old southern dong are exchanged for 1 new dong, the "liberation dong". The State Bank of Vietnam says the exchange ran from 22 to 30 September.

  2. One dong for the whole country

A single dong replaces the money of north and south. The north exchanges 1 for 1; the south converts its liberation dong at a separate rate.

  3. Ten old dong become one

A new dong replaces the old at 10 for 1, as part of a wider adjustment of prices, wages and money.

  4. The 500,000 dong note

The State Bank of Vietnam issues its first polymer notes, the 500,000 and 50,000 dong. The 500,000 is still the largest note.

Sources: State Bank of Vietnam, history and development of the banking sector, and its banknote pages; Wikipedia, "Vietnamese đồng"; Vietnamese-language summaries of the exchanges (scov.gov.vn, vuatiente.vn). The 6,250 figure is our own arithmetic from the three ratios.

Managed floating

A dong with a daily central rate

The dong is neither fixed nor free to float. The State Bank of Vietnam publishes a central rate against the US dollar every day and lets banks trade within a band around it, so the price of the dong in rupees still moves.

  • A central rate every day

Since 4 January 2016 the State Bank of Vietnam has set the rate each day from the previous day's interbank rate, the moves of other trading partners' currencies and domestic conditions.

  • A band of 5 percent

Banks trade the dong against the US dollar within 5 percent either side of the central rate. The band was widened from 3 percent on 17 October 2022.

  • Managed in law, crawl-like in practice

The IMF's 2025 Article IV staff report classes the arrangement as managed floating in law and crawl-like in practice.

Spending Vietnamese dong in Vietnam

Three things about Vietnamese money that help on the first day.

Banknotes, not coins

The State Bank of Vietnam stopped issuing coins in April 2011 and they do not circulate in practice, so cash means banknotes. The smallest current polymer note, 10,000 dong, is worth about ₹43.00, and the largest, 500,000 dong, about ₹2,150.00.

10,000₫ ₹43.00 · 500,000₫ ₹2,150.00

A longer note is a bigger note

Each polymer note is 4 mm longer than the one below it, from 132 mm for the 10,000 dong to 152 mm for the 500,000 dong. The 20,000 and the 500,000 are both blue in the State Bank's description, so check the length and the zeros before you hand one over.
