Turkey currency in one paragraph

What is the currency of Turkey?

The currency of Turkey is the Turkish lira, code TRY, written ₺ or TL. One lira is divided into 100 kuruş, and the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye issues the notes. The lira in use today began on 1 January 2005 as the New Turkish lira, when six zeros were removed, and it has been the plain Turkish lira again since 1 January 2009. It floats freely, so against the rupee it moves with the market: on 5 Oct 2026, one lira was worth about ₹2.02 at our selling rate. A quote in TRY currency always means this lira.

The ₺200 note is the highest in the current group. Atatürk is on its front, and its back carries Yunus Emre, his mausoleum, a rose and a pigeon.

The six zeros

The lira that lost six zeros

On 1 January 2005 Turkey took six zeros off its currency: one New Turkish lira replaced 1,000,000 old lira. A price quoted in millions of old lira is read by dividing by a million.

  1. Six zeros come off

The New Turkish lira (YTL) replaces the old lira at 1 for 1,000,000, and one new lira is divided into 100 kuruş.

  2. Old notes leave circulation

By the start of 2006 the old lira notes have stopped circulating, so the new notes are the only ones in use.

  3. New is dropped

The word New goes and the name is the Turkish lira again. The E9 banknote group begins, with a new ₺200 note at the top.

  4. Notes from ₺5 to ₺200

The lira is divided into 100 kuruş and the notes run from ₺5 to ₺200, so prices use far fewer digits than before 2005.

Floating since 2001

A lira that floats free

The Turkish lira has no fixed rate: the market sets its price, so its price in rupees can change from one day to the next. Prices inside Turkey change often too, which is why a recent rate matters.

  • No fixed rate

The lira has been a free float since February 2001. The market sets its price against other currencies, and the rupee price moves with it.

  • Prices change often

Annual inflation in Turkey was 31.51 percent in August 2026, according to the central bank, using data from TurkStat. Prices change often, so check recent prices before you go.

  • Check the rate before you go

A rate from a few weeks ago may no longer hold. Look at the live rate close to your trip, and the desk confirms your exact rate before anything is booked.
