Overview

Manchester at a glance

Manchester is the practical northern alternative to London: cheaper hotels and food, free museums, football and one of Britain's best food scenes. Two days covers the city, with Liverpool about 35 minutes away by train from Manchester Victoria. The fastest trains from London Euston take about two hours six minutes, and Edinburgh is just over three hours north.

For Indian travellers, the Manchester Museum's South Asia Gallery, opened in 2023 with the British Museum, is free, as is the Whitworth gallery nearby on Oxford Road. Further south on Wilmslow Road, Rusholme's Curry Mile still serves South Asian food at some of the city's lowest prices. IndiGo's direct flights from Mumbai and Delhi ended on 1 September 2026, so Indian visitors now connect through London, Europe or the Gulf.

From the airport, trains reach Manchester Piccadilly in 15 to 20 minutes for about £4 to £5 on a walk-up single; the Metrolink tram is slower at £4.60, and bus 43 costs £2. Bee Network buses charge £2 a ride, capped at £5 a day, with bus and tram fares frozen through 2026. Many city-centre hotels add a visitor charge of £1 a room a night.

The Old Trafford stadium tour and museum start at about £28.50 for adults and do not run on home match days. The National Football Museum charges £16 to £18 for an annual ticket, Manchester Cathedral is free, and Chetham's Library, the oldest public library in the English-speaking world, opens by pre-booked tour only. Indian passport holders need a UK Standard Visitor visa (£135).

Paying in Manchester

For the pound itself, the visa, cash limits and the TCS threshold, see the United Kingdom travel guide, and before you fly, our forex guide for UK trips from India.

Contactless covers almost everything, including buses and trams, and a float of £20 to £30 is plenty. Many overseas Visa and Mastercard cards work on Bee Network contactless, though your bank may add an overseas fee. Choose pounds when a terminal offers a currency choice. The UK stopped refunding VAT to overseas visitors in 2021, so the shelf price is the price.

Things to know

Common mistakes in Manchester

Booking Old Trafford on a match day

Tours do not run on home match days. Check the fixture list first.

Assuming the football museum is free

The National Football Museum charges £16 to £18 for an annual ticket; only Manchester residents and under-5s go free.

Taking the tram from the airport

The train to Piccadilly is faster and costs about the same. The tram only wins if your hotel is on the line.

Paying in rupees at the card machine

When a terminal or ATM offers to charge you in rupees, choose pounds. The rupee option lets the operator set its own rate.
