Lombok sits just east of Bali across the Lombok Strait, known for quieter beaches, the Gili Islands, and Mount Rinjani. This guide covers the best things to do in Lombok, the ferry over from Bali, what things cost, and the money habits worth knowing.
Lombok International Airport (LOP) receives domestic flights from Jakarta and Bali; there's no direct international arrival for most travellers, so it's usually reached via Bali.
Where to stay
Where you base yourself in Lombok shapes the trip more than almost anything else.

Kuta Lombok
The island's surf hub on the south coast, close to Mandalika's beaches, the practical base for a beach-and-surf trip.

Senggigi
The older, more established resort strip on the west coast, closer to the Bali ferry ports, suits a straightforward resort stay.

Gili Islands (Trawangan, Air, Meno)
Technically separate small islands off Lombok's northwest coast, no motor vehicles, the usual base for a Gili-focused stay rather than mainland Lombok itself.
Paying in Lombok
Lombok is more cash-reliant than Bali, especially on the Gili Islands where card acceptance is limited even at some resorts. Carry more cash than feels necessary, particularly for a Gili Islands stay, since ATMs are less common there than on the mainland.
For the rupiah itself, visa-on-arrival, the Bali tourist levy and the wider cash-versus-card picture, see the Indonesia travel guide.
Before you fly it is worth reading what an ATM withdrawal in Indonesia actually costs.

Getting around
Lombok has no meaningful public transit for tourists. Options are:
Grab or Gojek. Works in and around Kuta Lombok and Senggigi, coverage thins outside the main towns.
Private driver. The standard way to see Rinjani's foothills, waterfalls, and the south coast beaches in one trip, priced per day rather than per ride.
Scooter rental. Common and cheap, similar cautions apply as anywhere else in Indonesia; Lombok's roads are quieter than Bali's but still no real lane discipline.
Lombok FAQs
Pink Beach, Kuta Lombok's surf beaches, the waterfalls near Senaru, and a trip to the Gili Islands cover Lombok's highlights over three to five days.
By fast boat (1.5-3 hours from Padang Bai, more from Sanur or Serangan) or a short domestic flight. There's no bridge or tunnel between the islands.
Three days covers the mainland highlights. Five lets you add a Gili Islands stay or start planning a Rinjani trek without rushing.
Depends on the trip. Lombok mainland suits surf, waterfalls, and access to Rinjani. The Gili Islands suit a slower, no-vehicle beach stay with more nightlife on Trawangan specifically.
Broadly similar for food and transport, generally quieter and less developed, which can mean better value at the same price point rather than dramatically lower prices.
Cash is the safer default, especially on the Gili Islands where ATMs are limited. Cards work at resorts and larger hotels on the mainland.
