Where you base yourself in Jakarta shapes the trip more than almost anything else.
Central Jakarta (Sudirman, Thamrin, Menteng)
The business and hotel core, walkable to Monas and well connected to the rest of the city. The practical choice for a short stay.
South Jakarta (Kemang, Senopati)
More restaurants, bars, and a younger crowd. Suits a longer stay or anyone prioritising nightlife over sightseeing.
Kota Tua (Old Town)
Fewer hotel options but puts you inside the historic district itself, useful if that's the main reason for the stop.
Paying in Jakarta
Jakarta takes cards more readily than Bali. Malls, hotels, and established restaurants in Central and South Jakarta accept Visa and Mastercard without issue. Street food, markets, and smaller local spots are still cash only.

Getting around
Jakarta's traffic is genuinely one of the worst in Southeast Asia, and public transit doesn't yet cover the whole city.
Grab or Gojek. The default for most visitors, works well within Central and South Jakarta.
TransJakarta BRT. A bus rapid transit network with dedicated lanes, fares around IDR 3,500 flat. Faster than a taxi at peak hours since it skips the worst congestion, though it takes some figuring out for a first-time visitor.
MRT Jakarta. A metro line covering the Sudirman-Thamrin corridor, useful if your hotel and main stops sit along it.
Between Kota Tua, Monas, and South Jakarta, plan for 30-60 minutes each way by road, more at rush hour.

Most Indonesia trips are built around Bali, with Jakarta as a short stopover rather than the main destination. A day or two here works well if your flight routes through it anyway.
By domestic flight, roughly 1 hour 45 minutes, with frequent daily connections. There's no practical train or road option given the distance and the strait crossing involved.
Broadly similar for food and local transport, though Jakarta's hotel and dining scene in South Jakarta can run higher than equivalent options in Bali's tourist areas.
