Taiwan currency in one paragraph

What is the currency of Taiwan?

The currency of Taiwan is the New Taiwan dollar, code TWD, written NT$. It is also called the Taiwan dollar, the NT dollar or NTD, and people say kuai in speech. The Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan), in Taipei, issues the banknotes, as it has since July 2000; before that the Bank of Taiwan issued NT dollars, from their introduction on 15 June 1949. On 5 Oct 2026, one New Taiwan dollar was worth about ₹3.12 at our selling rate. A quote in TWD currency always means this dollar and not the US dollar, which is a separate currency at a different value.

The NT$500 note shows youth baseball on its front and a Formosan sika deer with Dabajian Mountain on its back. It is the brown note of the fifth series, issued in 2000.

New Taiwan dollars come as five banknotes and four coins in everyday use. The notes are the fifth series, which the central bank began issuing on 3 July 2000 and completed by 2002, in red, green, brown, blue and purple; the NT$200 and NT$2,000 are rarely seen. A redesign of all five notes was announced on 24 October 2025, but the notes below are the series in use today. Each note is shown with what it costs in rupees at our selling rate today.

Youth baseball on a banknote

The brown NT$500 note shows youth baseball on its front, part of Taiwan's youth baseball tradition. One match from that tradition is remembered: in 1968 a team of children from Red Leaf village, in Taitung, beat a visiting Japanese youth team 7 to 0.

  2. Youth baseball on the NT$500

The brown NT$500 note is issued in 2000 as part of the fifth series, with youth baseball on its front. It shows Taiwan's youth baseball tradition; no source we read says it shows the Red Leaf team.

  3. All five notes to be redesigned

The central bank's governor, Yang Chin-long, tells the legislature's Finance Committee that all five notes will be redesigned. Coins are not part of the plan.

  4. The notes in your wallet stay in use

The announcement changes nothing in your wallet today. The Taipei Times reported that old and new notes would circulate together for years, and that the NT$200 and NT$2,000 denominations are kept.

Cash still counts

A small unit with big-looking prices

One New Taiwan dollar is worth only a few rupees, so Taiwanese prices run into the hundreds and thousands. Cash is still widely used, so it helps to know the notes before you land.

  • Prices look big, rupees are small

A NT$1,000 note is far fewer rupees than the number suggests. The note table above shows every note in rupees at our selling rate.

  • Cash is still widely used

Travel guides say many places are cash only, from restaurants to night markets and bubble tea stalls, and that small shops expect small notes and coins.

  • Two notes you will rarely see

The NT$200 and NT$2,000 are rarely seen, so day to day you will handle the NT$100, NT$500 and NT$1,000 notes and the coins.
