Poland currency in one paragraph

What is the currency of Poland?

The currency of Poland is the Polish zloty, code PLN, written zł. One zloty is divided into 100 groszy, and the Narodowy Bank Polski (NBP), the National Bank of Poland, issues it. The zloty replaced the Polish mark in 1924, and the version in use today, the PLN, dates from 1 January 1995. Poland has belonged to the European Union since May 2004 but pays in its own currency, not the euro, and it is not in ERM II, so against the rupee the zloty moves with the market: on 5 Oct 2026, one Polish zloty was worth about ₹25.27 at our selling rate. A quote in PLN currency always means this zloty and not the euro, which is a separate currency at a different value.

The 200 zł note carries Sigismund I the Old on its front and, on its back, the eagle with an interwoven S from the Sigismund Chapel of Wawel Cathedral. It was first issued on 12 February 2016.

The 1924 reform

The reform that ended hyperinflation

In 1923 the Polish mark was in hyperinflation. In 1924 the government of Władysław Grabski replaced it with the złoty, at 1,800,000 marks to the złoty, so at that rate 180 million marks came to 100 zł of the new money.

  1. The mark collapses

The Polish mark falls into hyperinflation, which means prices rise so fast that money loses its value from one day to the next.

  2. The złoty replaces the mark

The government of Władysław Grabski replaces the mark with the złoty. One złoty is set equal to 1,800,000 marks.

  3. A century later

Poland marks 100 years since the reform, with a Sejm resolution on the anniversary and a new Poczta Polska stamp.

Outside the euro

A currency that stays outside the euro

Poland is in the European Union but has kept its own currency, and no date is set for the euro. Against the rupee the zloty has no fixed rate, so its price can change from one day to the next.

  • In the EU, outside the euro

Poland joined the European Union in May 2004 and must adopt the euro eventually, but no date is set. As of early 2026 no switching process had begun.

  • Not in ERM II

Poland is not in ERM II, the exchange-rate arrangement that comes before the euro. The zloty keeps its own price, and in rupees it moves with the market.

  • A new zloty since 1995

The version in use today dates from 1 January 1995, when it replaced the old zloty at 10,000 to 1. The code changed from PLZ to PLN at the same time.
