What is the currency of Indonesia?
The currency of Indonesia is the Indonesian rupiah, code IDR, written Rp. It has no plural: 50,000 rupiah, not rupiahs. Bank Indonesia issues it, and the state-owned Perum Peruri prints the notes and mints the coins. The rupiah first circulated as the Oeang Republik Indonesia on 30 October 1946, and it is the only legal tender in Indonesia, Bali included, so there is no separate Bali currency. One rupiah is a very small amount, so prices run into thousands and the top note is the Rp100,000: on 5 Oct 2026, one rupiah was worth about ₹0.0062 at our selling rate. Indonesia writes a dot between thousands, so Rp50.000 means fifty thousand. A quote in IDR always means this rupiah and not the Indian rupee.

Coins, in rupiah
The four coins of the 2016 series carry national heroes, not landmarks: I Gusti Ketut Pudja on the Rp1,000, Lt Gen T.B. Simatupang on the Rp500, Dr. Tjiptomangunkusumo on the Rp200 and Prof. Dr. Ir. Herman Johannes on the Rp100. The Rp1,000 is nickel-plated steel and the others are aluminium. The back shows the value in words, the name Bank Indonesia and the year mark.

The rupiah that was cut in half
At 8 pm on 10 March 1950, Finance Minister Sjafruddin Prawiranegara announced that the larger old notes in circulation would be cut in half: one half stayed money and the other became a loan to the government. Indonesians call it Gunting Syafruddin, Syafruddin's scissors.
The republic prints its own money
The Oeang Republik Indonesia, or ORI, the republic's first national money, enters circulation during the independence revolution, while Japanese and Dutch-era money still circulates.
Syafruddin's scissors
Old NICA and De Javasche Bank notes of the larger values are to be cut in half. The left half stays money at half value, the right half becomes a long-dated 3% government bond at half value, and bank deposits are halved into a government loan.
Bank Indonesia takes over
Bank Indonesia succeeds De Javasche Bank, whose notes were among those cut, and its first notes appear that year. A 1968 law later makes it the sole issuer of the rupiah.
Cutting zeros, not notes
A bill to drop three zeros sits in the 2025 to 2029 legislative programme, and the Finance Ministry expects it to be finalised by 2027. The idea was raised in 2013 and shelved in 2014.

Stable, not fixed
Bank Indonesia calls its approach flexible inflation targeting, and it counts exchange-rate stability as part of rupiah stability. Stable does not mean fixed: the rupiah's price in rupees still changes, which is why every rupee figure here carries a time.

Spending rupiah in Indonesia and Bali
Three things about Indonesian money that help on the first day.
Pay in rupiah
Indonesian law requires cash and non-cash payments, and price tags, to be in rupiah, and valid rupiah may not normally be refused. Dollars are tolerated at some tourist shops, though paying in them is illegal and the rate is poor, and even a card charge has to be in rupiah.
Prices and payments in rupiahCheck the small notes twice
The three smallest notes are pastel and easy to mix up, so read the figure as well as the colour: the Rp1,000 is green, the Rp2,000 grey and the Rp5,000 brown. A Rp1,000 note is about ₹6.20 and a Rp5,000 note about ₹31.00.
Rp1,000 ₹6.20 · Rp5,000 ₹31.00A dot means thousands
On an Indonesian price tag a dot does the job of an English comma, so Rp50.000 is fifty thousand rupiah, not fifty. The top note, the Rp100,000, is about ₹620.00.
Rp50.000 is Rp50,000 · ₹310.00Taking Indonesian rupiah from India
The Reserve Bank of India's rules apply to every currency, and the Indonesian rupiah is no exception.
Up to the equivalent of USD 3,000 per trip can leave India as Indonesian rupiah notes. The rest goes on a forex card or as a bank transfer.
Every resident can send up to USD 250,000 abroad each financial year under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, travel included.
Tax collected at source applies once your foreign-exchange purchases in a financial year cross ₹10 lakh: nil when an education loan pays, 2% for self-funded education and medical treatment, and 20% for travel and everything else. It is credited against your income tax when you file.

The basics
8 questionsWhat is the currency of Indonesia?
The currency of Indonesia is the Indonesian rupiah, code IDR, written Rp. It is the only legal tender across the country, from Java to Bali, with notes and coins issued by Bank Indonesia.
What is the full form of IDR in currency?
IDR stands for Indonesian rupiah: ID is Indonesia's two-letter country code and R is for rupiah, following the ISO 4217 standard. That is the IDR full form, and in a price list or a quote the IDR currency always means the rupiah, not the Indian rupee.
What is the Indonesian rupiah symbol?
The Indonesian rupiah symbol is Rp, written before the amount, as in Rp50.000. It is the Indonesia currency symbol you will see on every price tag, and what people mean when they search for the Rp currency or Rp Indonesia.
Indonesia ki currency kya hai?
Indonesia ki currency Indonesian rupiah (IDR) hai, jise Rp likha jata hai. Ek rupiah ki value bahut kam hoti hai: 5 Oct 2026 ko ek rupiah lagbhag ₹0.0062 ka tha, hamare selling rate par. Bali ki currency bhi yahi hai, kyunki Bali Indonesia ka hi hissa hai.
What is the Indonesia currency name?
The Indonesia currency name is the rupiah, or Indonesian rupiah in full, and the Bali currency name is the same, because Bali uses it too. It has no plural, so it is 50,000 rupiah, not rupiahs. People also search for it as Indonesian currency or, by mistake, the Indonesian rupee, but the name is always rupiah.
Does Bali have its own currency?
No. The Bali currency is the Indonesian rupiah, the only legal tender in Indonesia, and the law requires prices and payments to be in rupiah. On the notes Bali appears only as the Legong dance and the frangipani flower on the Rp50,000, and the Rp1,000 coin carries I Gusti Ketut Pudja, who sat on the independence preparatory committee for Lesser Sunda, now Bali and Nusa Tenggara.
How many sen make one rupiah?
One rupiah is 100 sen on paper, but the sen is legal and not issued, and Bank Indonesia's catalogue still lists a one-sen note from 1964. The smallest coin in the current series is the Rp100, though bank statements still show cents.
How do I read an Indonesian price like Rp50.000?
Indonesia puts a dot between thousands and a comma before decimals, the reverse of English, so Rp50.000 is fifty thousand rupiah, not fifty. Bank Indonesia's English pages write the same amount as Rp50,000, and bank statements show cents after a comma, as in Rp1.234,56.
